                       Narrative text

What is Narrative Text? Narrative text is a fictional story or an essay made to entertain the reader. We usually encounter narrative texts in the form of fairy tales, folk tales, and other fictional stories. The purpose of Narrative text, as mentioned above, is to entertain the reader/listener in a story with sequential events that lead to a climax, and finally find a solution.

Generic Structure of Narrative Text Narrative text has 3 structural arrangements as follows: Orientation The Orientation section contains the introduction of the characters, the background of the place and time of the story. (who, what, when and where) Complications In the complication section, problems start to arise and must be resolved by the main character in the story. Resolution The resolution is where the story ends. In this section the problem is solved by one of the main characters. In the Resolution section there is also usually a moral value or advice from the story or what is commonly known as Coda.

Example of story narrative text The legend of Malin Kundang

 (Orientation)
Once upon a time, in a small village near the coast in West Sumatra, there lived a woman and her son. They are Malin Kundang and his mother. His mother was a single parent because Malin Kundang's father had passed away when he was a baby. Malin Kundang had to live hard with his mother
(Complication)
Malin Kundang was a boy who was healthy, diligent and strong. He usually goes to sea to catch fish. After getting fish, he would bring them to his mother, or sell the fish he caught to the city. One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing, he saw a merchant's ship which was being raided by a small band of pirates. He helped the merchant. With his courage and strength, Malin Kundang defeated the pirates. The merchant was very happy and thanked him. In return the merchant asked Malin Kundang to sail with him. To get a better life, Malin Kundang agreed. He left his mother alone. Years later, Malin Kundang became very rich. He had a large ship and was assisted by many crew members who loaded merchandise. Perfect he has a beautiful wife too. While he was sailing on his trading trip, his ship landed on a beach near a small village. The villagers recognized him. Word spread fast in the city; “Malin Kundang has become rich and now he is here”. An old woman ran to the beach to meet the upstart merchant. She is Malin Kundang's mother. He wanted to hug her, to let go of his sorrow of being lonely after so long. Unfortunately, when the mother arrived, Malin Kundang, who was in front of his neat-looking wife and his crew, denied meeting the lonely old woman. Three times her mother begged Malin Kundang and three times snapped at him. Finally Malin Kundang said to her "Enough, old woman! I never had a mother like you, a dirty and ugly woman!" After that he ordered his men to set sail. He was about to leave the old mother again but at that moment he was full of sorrow and anger. Finally in anger, she cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn to stone if he didn't apologize. Malin Kundang just laughed and really set sail
 (Resolution)
On a calm sea, suddenly a storm came. The big ship was wrecked and it was too late for Malin Kundang to apologize. He was thrown by the waves from his ship. He fell on a small island. It was too late for him to escape his curse. Suddenly, he turned to stone.
